How achievements work

How achievements unlock, and what the unlock rates say

Seven achievements compare against a stored number, and four of those numbers are not in the description. This guide lists them and reads the Steam unlock rates against the stage each one comes at.

The three rarest achievements on Steam: the one-hour run, the full journal and the bare-handed boss kill.

The seven checks with a number in them

Each check runs when the action it names happens: a kill, a sale, a purchase, a meal, a boss dying, the boat moving, the ending playing. The comparison is against a fixed constant in the game, and the constants are these.

Playtime counts across sessions

BeanBeanAsks forFinish the game within 1 hourPlayers who have it2.7% is the one people misread. The check is not “beat the game in one sitting”: it compares the total playtime saved with the game, which accumulates across every session on that save. Pausing costs nothing. What does not work is finishing the story on a save that has already been played for more than 1 hour, however fast the last session was.

What the unlock rates tell you

Steam publishes how many owners hold each achievement. On 2026-09-02, Getting started sat at 98.5% and Bean at 2.7%. The figure counts everyone who owns the game, including people who stopped on the first island, so a low number means “few players got this far” at least as often as it means “this is hard”.

Read the column against the stage. The late-game group has 11 achievements, and three of the 4 under 10% are in it: the bare-handed final boss, the full journal and the one-hour run, each of which asks for the whole game done a second way. The fourth, Everyone's dreamEveryone's dreamAsks forKill a seagull with dynamitePlayers who have it6.7%, is a mid-game novelty that nobody does by accident, which is why a seagull and a stick of dynamite rank beside the hardest late-game goals.

How to use the lookup

Filter by stage or by how many players hold an achievement, and open any card for the exact check.

The lookup lists all 28 with their Steam icons. Each card shows the description Steam shows and the condition the game tests, so the hidden numbers above are on the card that needs them. The “rarest first” sort is the quickest way to see which ones are left after a normal run. For a route through all 28 in the order they come up, use How do I get every achievement?.
