The grill multiplies what a catch sells for. It is one of the four multipliers on the sell price, and the only one with a deadline attached.
The timings
| State | Seconds on the grill | Value multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Raw | 0 | 1x |
| Perfect | 8 | 1.5x |
| Burnt | 16 | 0.1x |
The grill raises a catch's cooked state at a fixed rate, so these timings are the same for every creature. Value between the listed points follows the curve rather than a straight line.
A catch cooks at a fixed rate, so the numbers above apply to every creature equally. A

their best value at the same moment.
What overcooking costs
The drop from perfect to burnt is a factor of fifteen. On a cheap fish that is a rounding error. On an expensive one it is the whole session.
| Creature | Sells for | Best bait for it |
|---|---|---|
| $10 | Beginner Lure (17.5%) | |
| $380 | Professional Lure (3.8%) | |
| $1,450 | Scientific Lure (15%) | |
| $1,500 | Scientific Lure (25%) | |
| $2,200 | Scientific Lure (10%) |
Multiply those by 1.5 for a perfect cook and by 0.1 for a burnt one. A perfectly grilled Superdwarf Fish is worth 3,300; a burnt one is worth 220.
The rule Count to eight and take it off. There is no visual cue that distinguishes the peak from the seconds either side of it, so timing beats watching.

It is not only for fish
That makes cooking a flat 1.5x on anything you were going to sell, not a seafood mechanic.
The volcano cooks for free
It is the only place in the game that cooks something perfectly without you counting.
Where the grill is
The grill is not available from the start and it is not on every island. Islands 3 and 4 have
one. It unlocks through the grillmaster’s quest, offered on island 3 and again on island 4, which takes a

That matters for a selling run: if you are fishing somewhere without a grill, the catch sells at its raw value and cooking is not an option you forgot, it is one you do not have.
How cooking fits with the other multipliers
Sell value is the base worth multiplied by the weight roll, the cooking multiplier, any betting multiplier, and the product of the kill bonuses. Cooking and kill bonuses are the two you control.
A perfect cook is a flat 1.5x. A well-executed kill can be worth more than that on its own, and the two stack. The money guide covers the bonus side.
Next The weight roll is the multiplier you cannot control. Weight and value explains the spread it produces.
