How boss drops work

What each boss drops, and what the trophy is for

A boss does not pay out in money. It leaves a single quest item on the ground, and that item is the key to the boat, the next island or the ending.

Three of the five boss trophies: the crab's shell buys the boat, the fin opens island 4, the head opens island 5.

Every trophy is flagged as a quest item and carries a sale value of $0. That is not a rounding quirk: the game gives the shopkeeper nothing to pay. A trophy has two uses, the hand-in listed above and the Reel of Fortune, which accepts a quest item in place of a drip creature.

The meat item the bosses share

Every boss, and only the bosses, is linked to one further item: the Meat ChunkMeat ChunkKindBoss meatSells for$10Meat ofAlbatross, Giant Piranha, Mutated Bowhead Whale, Pufferfish, Spider Crab. It is the meat form of all five, weighs 0.05 kg and sells for $10. No non-boss creature has a meat item at all, which is why the lookup lists six items. The data we read says which creatures the item belongs to and what it is worth; it does not say how a boss turns into one, so this site makes no claim about that.

A trophy is also a spin

The Reel of Fortune checks what is thrown in: a creature has to be a drip variant, and anything else has to be a quest item. The five trophies are quest items, so the machine takes one and spins, at the same odds as for a drip creature. Do not do it with a trophy you still need: the machine destroys what it is fed, the hand-in then cannot happen, and the data we read shows no way to obtain a second trophy of any kind. Hand the trophy in. The fact matters only so that nobody loses an island to a curious throw, and for the reel’s own rules; see What are the Reel of Fortune odds?.

What this means for the fight

The trophy is the only extra thing a boss gives you, and its job is the hand-in. The boss’s body is a separate matter: it sells at the creature’s own price with the usual weight and kill bonuses, worked through in How is a creature’s value decided?.

How to use the lookup

Open any of the six items to see which boss it comes from, who takes it and what the hand-in opens.

The lookup filters by kind (trophies or meat) and by the island the boss lives on. Searching for a boss’s name finds its trophy. Each item’s card also names the NPC to hand it to, with the same names the island lookup uses, so you can go from the drop straight to the person who wants it.
